8 Magenta 38,771,197 -9.9%
9 Haussmann Saint-Lazare 38,268,052 -19.8%
10 Saint-Denis 36,960,585 +15.0%

Four Paris-region RER stations complete the top 10. The file counts Magenta apart from Gare du Nord, and Haussmann Saint-Lazare apart from Saint-Lazare, even though they are connected.

Together, the top 10 handle 25.9% of all passengers in the file. Gare du Nord alone sees more passengers than the 2,420 smallest stations combined.

The file is not exhaustive. In Île-de-France, regional traffic is extrapolated, so Gare du Nord’s total is partly an estimate (see the method). SNCF warns that its method changes from year to year: a swing can come from the calculation, not the passengers.

15 (37) Toulouse Matabiau 14,522,596 +46.8%

After Lyon Part-Dieu, the biggest regional stations are Lille Flandres, Strasbourg and Bordeaux Saint-Jean. Toulouse Matabiau has grown the most since 2019: +46.8%.

At the other end: the 10 least-used train stations in France.

Since 2019

The total went from 2,732,888,017 to 3,068,305,604 passengers, or 335,417,587 more.

The biggest rises (stations with over one million passengers):

  • Villetaneuse Université+148.7%, from 1,840,999 to 4,579,187.
  • Gargan+112.6%, from 3,150,620 to 6,698,835.

The biggest falls (same threshold):

  • Fontenay-le-Fleury-55.0%, from 3,165,988 to 1,425,087.
  • Haussmann Saint-Lazare-19.8%, from 47,687,285 to 38,268,052. That is 9,419,233 fewer passengers, the largest fall in volume on this list.

The file does not explain these swings. SNCF warns that its counting methods change from year to year.

In the Paris region, regional traffic is extrapolated: a swing can come from the calculation, not the passengers.

Class A in the file only, stopped at rank 15. Further down: Lille Europe −14.3%, Grenoble +12.6%, Paris Bercy +27.5%.

This gap depends on the comparison with 2019. Over 2024 alone the order partly reverses: Gare du Nord +13.3%, Toulouse flat. In volume, Gare du Nord has gained the most since 2019: +12,279,784. The file gives no reason, and Île-de-France regional traffic in it is extrapolated, while totals outside Île-de-France come from ticketing. SNCF warns that its method changes from year to year: a swing can come from the calculation, not the passengers.

  • Source: Fréquentation en gares, SNCF open data, ODbL licence, accessed 6 November 2026.
  • Period: the year 2024, compared with 2019.
  • Measure: passengers per year and per station. Outside the Paris region, figures come from ticket sales. Paris-region regional traffic is extrapolated from counts done every 3 to 4 years. Non-passengers are excluded.
  • Limits: tickets sold by third parties are not included. The file is not exhaustive. A trip counts at both its start and its end.
